About the Artist:

Catherine Hamilton grew up at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains in Altadena, CA, and spent her childhood exploring the canyons and foothills there. She began birding with her father when too young to know any better, then abandoned it in pursuit of hipper things like going to art school: she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design and a Master of Fine Arts from Bennington College. Catherine taught at RISD for seven years, but left in 2004 because she had developed severe allergies to chemicals used in the classrooms. While contemplating a life without painting and a job, she began spending time looking at birds. She currently works out of her studio in New York, NY.

About Sightings 2003:

The sightings blog is centered on birdwatching and related observations and ruminations; the entries are from walks in areas both urban and rural from New England and trips across North America during the year 2003. The writings and drawings are pen on paper, posted chronologically, and are not edited because this is essentially a sketchbook. This was a one-year project; a new blog project can be viewed at www.mydogoscar.com/birdspot.

About Oscar:

Oscar is a truly exceptional dog. He is more widely known and admired than his owners. In addition to his sleek and marginally tough good looks, he possesses a keen intelligence and can sneeze on command.
