news/events 2007:

Oct 1 - 21:

I did a three-week artist's residency with the venerable Massachusetts Audubon Society. During this time I trolled various MA Audubon Sanctuaries, looking at birds, and making drawings. In conjunction with this project, I kept a blog of my experiences and drawings. Look for it at:

Oct 7 & 14th: I taught another two-part drawing class offered by the Mass. Audubon Center for Visual Arts... for more info click here.
Oct 18th: I am gave an artist's talk at the Center for Visual Arts in Canton, MA as part of their "Art Talk: Conversations with Artists, Curators and Collectors" program. Click here for more info.
Oct 19th: Opening reception and display of the works created during the Mass Audubon residency. Click here for info.
July 21 - 28: Massachusetts College of Art/Art New England Summer Workshops in Bennington, VT. I taught a week-long drawing class called: "360 Degrees: Assessing the Landscape." This was a workshop that addressed both conceptual and visual concerns in working from the landscape. Couldn't have been in a better location; it was a beautiful and thought-provoking week. For more info on the ANE Summer Workshops, click here.
May 13 & 20: Massachusettes Audubon, Canton Center for Visual Arts, Canton, MA. We drew from live birds at the Blue Hills Trailside Museum and Nature Center, and worked on individual development and interpretations of birds. This has turned into a very enjoyable repeat experience, and I will probably come back again soon. For more info click here.
April 15: I gave an artist's lecture at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, in Providence, RI, in conjunction with their wonderful exhibit "Power and Serenity in Japanese Nature Prints." I spoke on the parallels between my work and Japanese images of nature, and on the influences of specific artists that were represented in the exhibit.
Jan 27:

Massachusettes Audubon, Canton Center for Visual Arts, Canton, MA. This was another amazing opportunity to draw from live birds at the Blue Hills Trailside Museum and Nature Center.

Jan 19 - 20: Claybrook Lodge, Highland Plantation, ME. I spent a weekend hiking in the woods of the Flagstaff Lake region of Maine - one of my favorite places on the planet, and with some really fabulous people (info on Maine Audubon click here, info on the lodge click here).
Jan 6 - 13, 2007: I visited the Yucatan, Honduras, and Belize, and though it should have been a fairly tame and touristy excursion (we were joining a cruise with 14 family members), somehow NYC managed to integrate chaos into the experience... imagine getting ready to drive to JFK and finding that your car had not one but two punctured tires, then imagine missing three consecutive flights, and then missing the boat, and then impromptu bus trips across the entire Yucatan trying to catch up with your family...

news/events 2006:

Nov 30:

Figments, Providence, RI. Uber boutique paperie and gallery owner Peggy Lo hosted a holiday show of some of my drawings: Small Animals featured studies for a series I am working on. For more info on this and other fabulous Figments events click here.
Nov 4th, 11th: Massachusettes Audubon, Canton Center for Visual Arts, Canton, MA. I spent two very enjoyable afternoons teaching a small group and drawing from live birds. This was a really special opportunity. I mean REALLY special. Inches away, these birds were. Unbelievable.

Oct 14th:

DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Lincoln, MA. I gave an artist's gallery talk about my drawings in the exhibit Going Ape:Confronting Animals in Contemporary Art. For info on the exhibit, click here. For info on my drawings in the exhibit, click here.
Oct 1st:

I officially moved my studio to Brooklyn, NY. Also drove across the country and back, for various reasons, and birded along the way.

May 28-Jun 9:

Spent a couple of weeks birding in Alaska, mostly around Nome and Anchorage. Looking for birds when the sun barely sets is INSANE.
May 13th: After two (or is it three?) years of captaining a Birdathon team in Rhode Island and coming in second place each year, we finally came in first. The weather was just awful. Anyone who doesn't know what a birdathon is really doesn't want or need to... for a species list, check out Audubon of RI here.
April 9th: Darien Nature Center, Darien, CT. Exhibit of my marsh drawings and journal writing, paired with a saltwater tank and taxonomic specimens from marsh inhabitants. This was an amazing experience, and I heartily recommend exhibiting in a nature center to anyone jaded and weary of art-world speak. It just felt so PURE.
April 1st: Audubon Society of RI, Annual Birder's Conference, Kimball Wildlife Sanctuary, Charelston, RI. As a featured presenter, I gave an artist's talk on the intersection of something as oddball as bird watching with contemporary art.
Feb 14th: The 'temporary Museum, Brooklyn, NY hung an installation of drawings from mydogoscar.com's sightings 2003. This was a very nice little exhibit - what a fabulous Williamsburg space.
