Happily ensconced with family on the high plains of Colorado, I am also happily thinking of warmer climes and further travels. I decorated the endpapers of my next sketchbook in preparation for a trip to Costa Rica this January. It seems my (Not a) Big Year has turned into a strange new Big Life. The illustrations here were a little challenging: the endpapers on a Moleskine sketchbook are not an easy match for water-based media!
Sketchbook 2012, endpaper. From left to right: Green Violetear, Keel-billed Toucan, and Turquoise-browed Motmot (with separated tail). Watercolor, 3.5 x 11″ open.

I just wanted to say that I love every single illustration on your site, it truly is an inspiration.
You have a wonderful gift for capturing the likeness and the particular small movements that give your subjects a unique character and life. Great work, and I look forward to seeing more of it.
Happy New Year!

Hi Catherine,
I’m a photographer but I return frequently to your site for inspiration.
Have a great trip to Costa Rica.
If the endpapers are any indication, your trip sketchbook will be stunning and, hopefully, you’ll find it
in your heart to share the progress with those looking for a fix of your work
I would like instructions on how to create a big year that turns into a strange Big Life. I think a book needs to happen.
