A work in progress, as are most things on this blog. And as tonight’s election results currently are. And as the astonishing pile of gear and clothes for my trip to Texas tomorrow remains.

This drawing is from Texas, which is why I am posting it now. Tomorrow morning I am headed to the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival in Harlingen, TX to meet other people like myself who for some reason are genetically or psychologically driven to birding AND blogging. This is potentially a frightening thing, and perhaps you may never see me again… I am experiencing an unequivocal sense of cinema: the alien Catherine Hamilton discovers that there is life on this planet with the same genetic makeup as herself for the first time ever. Other than her parents, who don’t count because they are in the odder sector already.

In short, I am looking forward to this. In addition to meeting other bloggers such as Birdchick and Mike from 10,000 Birds, I am reuniting with the aforementioned DNA-guilty family and friend members who got me started on this at the tender age of five. We have an itinerary ahead of us that might leave enough time for sleeping but probably won’t. I have never met anyone more capable of intensive activity on zero sleep than older birders. Hardcore, they are, and woe to the daughter that complains of five-hour nights and sixteen-hour days in the field. You might think of bird watching as a gentle pastime. But you would be very wrong.
