What I did Over The Weekend: A List
    1. Saturday: ditched the whalewatch as I woke up with a twitchy stomach due to rich restaurant food the previous night. I am determined to go through life never having to have a “technicolor yawn” (Austrailian lingo) aboard a ship. I have seen too much of it. You become sub-dishrag. A Herald’s Petrel could waft by and you would not care.
    2. INSTEAD, headed to Westport. I had not been to “the coast” since the end of March due to broken leg and never ending atlasing. Going to Westport on a beautiful sunny Saturday at the end of July to try to bird is (as I put it on my Massbird post) like hitting yourself in the head with a bag of hammers. But still got shorebirds (including Oystercatchers); terns (including Black) and a wayward Cory’s Shearwater. And no technicolor yawns!
    3. Went out to dinner again with Sheila’s sister, ex-nun, now a grade school teacher and in town to study Nepalese and Tibetan Buddhism for the month at Holy Cross. Any pious port in a storm.
    4. SUNDAY: Went to QUABBIN, for an entire morning of glorious deep forest birding. The breeding season is slowly wending it’s way to its inevitable conclusion, fall migration, but still there was lots of breeding behavior to note including a territorial pair of Yellow-billed Cuckoos and (wildly) a flock of 12 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS. No they are not supposed to be here now anywhere in MA. Winter, yes: July, NO. The forest was covered with bizarre fungi (all the rain),some in psychedelic colors like hot flaming oranges (huge patches of this small, slimy stalked fungi)and others in deep reds and lavenders. Lots of tall, deadly Amanitas, standing out against the deep gloom of the forest. Also: Indian Pipe galore and an amazingly colorful display of WOOD LILY. Came home refreshed but bug bitten.
    5. WATCHED the new DVD release of SQUARE PEGS. Not as great as I remembered it, BUT there is (was) a great appearance by DEVO in one episode and the WAITRESSES in another.
    6. Woke up at 3:35AM with a SCREECH OWL calling extremely loudly right outside front window. Two different call types, usually indicating nesting or young in nest.In recent years they have bred in the tree in front and here they are again. After breakfast, finished CENTRAL PARK IN THE DARK, the last part of which was all about the re-introduction of SCREECH OWLS in the park. Nice bit o’ synchronicity.
Hope your weekend was as much fun.
