Cool news: friend and uber-author David Ebershoff has a new book called The 19th Wife out, and yours truly has a wee illustration in it. By all accounts the book is fantastic (early press has been glowing), and David has just launched a national book tour. In addition to readings in NY and LA (I’ll be at the Pasadena reading), he’s hitting a gazillion other states, so check it out! More info and schedule at website: www.19thwife.com

  1. Fiction or non? I have a policy of not covering fiction because if I did, I would be doing that all the time. THAT SAID, have him have his publisher send a book my way, and I will see what I can do.

  2. It’s a dual-narrative with a modern, fictional tale interwoven with an historical narrative of Ann Eliza Young, the 19th wife of Brigham Young.

His book tour is scheduled pretty tightly, but I know that he is speaking in Cambridge, MA, either in July or August. The info is in the link I posted.

  3. We can easily do a “phoner”, which is what happens on a lot of jam packed book tours (“if this is Tuesday, this must be the Barnes and Noble in Hackensack.”) Not that he needs my show, mind you, his reviews have been excellent. Your drawing is all over his website.

  4. Congrats Catherine!

I’m interested in reading this book.
My dad’s side of the family are Mormons & my great grandmother’s father had 2 wives & many children from both.

  5. Catherine:

I am in the midst of reading CENTRAL PARK IN THE DARK for an interview next week. I know how you feel about the Pale Male obsession, and Warie Winn, the author of this book is the author of RED-TAILS IN LOVE, but THIS book is actually quite alright in a very chatty, name-dropping New Yorker sort of way. So many folks are mentioned, I half expect to find you in here, and you must have been at some of the events mentioned, though, then again, you might purposely avoid this crowd too. And I would not blame you. I am likely off to the seas for a whale (really tube-nose) watch tomorrow. Looking forward to it like you would not believe.

  6. I am going to pick up that book; NY Times did a nice article around it and it sounds pretty great. Who can not love people who are trolling for moths in the dark in Central Park?

I have met some of the people, but have kept a really quiet profile. I’m toying with the idea of doing a Central Park video bird report as part of the blog… could be so geeky-bad it might be great – like part weather report, part birding, part culture vulture.

  7. The Central park Nature ‘scene”: sounds pretty clique-ish from the book, but cool none the less. But some reporting from outside the group, like by you, would be greatly appreciated.

MORMONS IN MY BACKGROUND: none. I come from a long line of nuns and monks with outsized libidos and poor self control.

  8. Mormons in my background: also none. Alina, I had no idea you had them in your family!

  9. “I come from a long line of nuns and monks” is going to be my new answer to everything ever asked of me.

Friend: “Catherine, what are you doing this weekend, can you help me move to my new apartment?”

Me: “I’m sorry, I really can’t. I come from a long line of monks and nuns.”

    Friend: (confused, stony silence)

  10. “I come from a long line of nuns and monks with outsized libidos and poor self control.” –ML

    Gotta just adore this line!

  11. Oh and I am cracking up over your conversation with “friend”!! Another cool scene in a Catherine/Mark movie.
