Past it’s due date sometime in 2003. Of course, that depends on how you are saying it. BTW:
“WHAT-ever” (circa 1980s), has made a comeback lately, but abbreviated to: “What-ev”, though still the conjoining of both upraised thumbs (left and right thumbs touch at tips) and forefingers in front of face is still preferable. “Hella” is also off the shelf.
Now, wait a minute here, wouja. What the heck r ya doin over therr. I once saw a magnifying glass focus the rays of the sun to catch a blade of grass on fire. That took fooorrreevveer, ya know? I’m just sayin….
re story: I’m starting a series of landscapes from wildlife refuges - this one is from Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, and I think of it as the field where the snowy owl WAS. I’m working from lens-warped photos and then changing the space around. There was an owl in the photo but I have smeared it out. The next few drawings I think will be of maddeningly complex spaces, ones that could either be very shallow or have a lot of depth… I’m thinking of them as spaces you can’t quite reach or can never really go to… we’ll see how this one goes…
“smearing the owl” sounds like a euphemism for something, but I have no idea what. As in: “Great! That’s it! I just “smeared the owl” on this one, dammit!”
GAB (a gathering of artists who are birders - not necessarily artists who are bird artists) is supposed to happen tomorrow during the day at the Visual Arts Center in Canton, MA. It looks like a go so far…
Another one that bugs me: “yeah it is.” As in:
Person 1: “Man, I can’t believe we are on the road to MA at five in the morning. It’s snowing like a b****.”
We are doomed to be “in the snow belt” tomorrow, as is typical, so chances are great we will be digging out (well, Sheila will). I am concerned about the weather, though I don’t think it will be that bad near Canton, other folks who would attend may be discouraged.
“Yeah it is”, not as offensive as : “b**** (or is that how you intended it to sound? And, frankly, in that car/snow/dark, long drive scenario: “Yeah, it is” is better than just a mumbled: “yeah” or worse: nothing, just a turning up of the satellite radio and snores.
However, the “yeah it is” thing has a certain lilt, a weary resignation, not an affirmation but an insinuation that what you just said is inane… emphasis in the “yeah” and then a little, flat, shorter “it is.” Maybe it’s a NY thing… but when your road trip partner just turns up the radio, well, that’s worse - just cold.
Catherine, it didn’t stop snowing here till 11:30AM. I really hated thinking of you , PRE-DAWN, driving in that mess all the way to the GAB. I hope all is well and you have/had a great time. We (Sheila actually: the one good thing about breaking my leg!) are still digging out as I write this.
Per above: “weary resignation” seems to be the theme music for about half the conversation that goes on today. It’s just a jot away from “I’m so bored” and terminal ennui. Someone needs to write a book on the use of “lilt” as a method of put-down.
My timing is terrible for checking your blog here. I am working on a movie in Boston and would have stayed there to see you in Canton if I had known in time!
I have loved checking this from time to time. I’ve been meaning to write and tell you I went to Patagonia earlier this winter. I will send some bird photos to your email, I would highly recommend it for a trip. Here in Maine we have had owls out in large numbers during the day due to the heavy snow cover. Many species unusual to Maine and many roadside fatalities. Sadly I am in Boston all week and unable to bird much. I hope to get out soon.
Helen - it is great to hear from you! So sorry to have missed the chance to see you in Boston this time around… next time I will do a proper emailing. Send me pics of Patagonia; I am soooo jealous!

..wait a minute, that’s just the same as #4, only darker….and with more detail.

yeah, right?
(has this phrase been as overused up there as it has in ny?)

Cathy, I want to know the story behind this drawing… I guess that’s me being a wee bit nosey… I love it, it’s my favorite one.

You “smeared” the owl out?
I bet that felt GREAT.

Oh you are the COOLEST! This is going to be one bad ass body of work!

I think I smeared the owl last night with some old friends from RISD - at a LES bar called Death & Company…
Also, people need to stop saying “not so much.” Some like to use that phrase often. Me, not so much.

RE: The Gathering: it’s tomorrow right? Is anyone saying anything about the weather? As in “snowstorm”.
RE: figgas of speech. I grew up near Boston and I am still trying to erase “wicked pissa” from my mind.
