While I am in this working-like-crazy-holiday-madness lull on my blog, I would love to put out an RFI to anyone familiar with butterfly species: I have been slowly getting these onto flickr, and there are some that I have not identified. I have locations and dates for each sighting, and though I have not yet gotten them written into the descriptions, that info is available. The butterfly set is viewable here.

Can I have locations? And numbers for the pictures? For instance, shot #1 is of an AMERICAN SNOUT, rare in these parts( MA). There are now some great books on butterfly ID and even a guide just to CA butterflies and even a guide to CA odonates (part of the U Cal nature series: the latest volume on CA Owls.

Just got back from seeing the SLATY-BACKED GULL in Gloucester, where there is quite a gull show at the Jodrey Fish Pier: 15+ Icelands; 3+ Glaucous; 5+ Lesser Black-backed; 2 “Nelson’s” and believe it or not, the word is that there are TWO Slaty-backeds.

here’s a quick go, without knowing locations. You had ID’d almost all of them correctly.:
    1. AMERICAN SNOUT (Libytheana carinenta)
    2. COMMON CHECKERED SKIPPER (f): Pyrgus communis)
    3. GULF FRITILLARY (Agraulis vanillae)
    4. ditto
    5. SOUTHERN DOGFACE good guess, but the forewing doesn’t look as pointed.
    6. SKIPPER SPECIES: this is where location would be helpful. ALSO: ALWAYS try to shoot some of the upper-wing pattern of skippers. Could be FIERY, BYSSUS (if you were in Fla); could be any one of a number of orangy skippers.
    7. MONARCH
    8. GIANT SWALLOWTAIL
    9. E TIGER SWALLOWTAIL
    10. ZEBRA HELICONIUS
    11. RED ADMIRAL
    12. PAINTED LADY
    13. WHITE ADMIRAL
    14. RED SATYR
    15. RED SATYR
    16. WESTERN SWALLOWTAILS: easily told by the more or less continuous marginal band on the under of the forewing
    17. SILVER SPOTTED SKIPPER
    18. BLACK SWALLOWTAIL
    19. CALIFORNIA SISTER
    20. VARIEGATED FRIT. W/ Melissa or Acmon Blue?
    21. did you see this in TEXAS? Possibly a REAKIRT’S BLUE.
    22. tough, but from what I can barely make out, the under hind wing black marginal line does not look swollen at veins. But this is just barely discernable. Possible ACMON BLUE female.
    23. Yup, that’s a blue alright. Possibly REAKIRT’S, but who knows except Vladimir Nabokov and he ain’t talkin’.
    24. one damned cute lil’ heliconius or some such lep from the tropics is my guess. Something like H. sapho or something like that. Where was this taken?

    Thanks Mark!
I am (slowly) getting up the date/place info. I can’t believe I even started this project…
